2009-12-14
The Greensboro Stars Squirt A/AA youth hockey team rolled into Columbia, Maryland for this years annual Silver Sticks Hockey Tournament with one mission "make it to the finals".....Mission accomplished.
On Friday (11/27/09) brought a tough draw and two games in the same day. It began with a spirited game with the always tough Hampton Roads (VA) Whalers, the Stars came out determined and forged ahead to a 7-2 victory to start round robin paly in the tournament. . Game two saw us against a NOVA Icedogs team that had to win to stay alive in the tournament.....the Stars answered this intensity with a hard fought 5-2 victory. Saturday schedule was light with only one game on the table and it proved to be the toughest test yet. The home town Howard Huskies were playing for stay or go home and the game proved to be a goaltending dual..we ended the game in a 2-2 tie. This ended the round robin play and our point total relied on the outcome of two other games happening at the same time.......we emerged as the number 2 seed and advanced to the semi-finals on Sunday morning against the number 1 seeded team in the tournament in the Skyland (PA) Kings. The game began at the early hour of 7am in Rockville, Maryland (Home of the Montgomery Blue Devils) with both team understanding what the outcome of this game meant. Both teams battled back and forth exchanging goals throughout. The game was tied with just over 2 minutes left in the game at 4-4.....we called a timeout....set our play....set our players....and score the eventual game winning goal...Final score 5-4....heading to the finals. Follow the game we headed back to the hotel to prepare for the finals at 12 noon in Laurel, Maryland.....breakfest and rest.....10:30am headed back to the rink in hopes of bringing home a Silver Sticks Championship to Greensboro. The final game versus the Westchester (NY) Vipers proved to be everything we expected....hard fought and intense......but you could see the 5 game weekend had begun to takes its toll...the boys left everything out on the ice, but came up short. Trailing 2-1 with a minute to go we pulled the goalie for the extra attacker.........Final score 3-1. The boys earned an opportunity to represent the Southeastern Region in the Finalist Tournament in Forest, Ontario on January 22-24.....they truely earned this right.
