Jr. Pirates Walk for Their Captain
2010-06-06
Members of the ECHA Jr. Pirate hockey teams participated in the Juvenile Diabetes’ “Walk for a Cure” in Greenville, NC on March 20th to raise funds and awareness for Juvenile Diabetes. The Jr. Pirates were walking to honor their Squirt Captain, Hunter Christopher, who was diagnosed with diabetes this past Fall.Hunter helped lead his Squirt team to a CHL House Select Championship in 2010.
Hunter’s diagnosis provided the team a better understanding of juvenile diabetes and how someone with juvenile diabetes can play (and play well) hockey. During shift changes, Hunter often had to check his blood glucose levels and the Team Manager would relay his levels to his mother with hand signals. The Jr. Pirates contributed a portion ($250) of their annual Skate-a-thon fundraiser to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to find a cure.
